Online Application
The Graduate School of Arts & Sciences strongly encourages applicants to use the online application. Use of the online application allows the department immediate access to your application and will allow you to track the status of credentials that the graduate school has received. When you apply online you will not need to send a paper application.
The deadline for receipt of applications and all supporting materials for most departments or programs is January 3. A few departments and programs have earlier deadlines. You must meet the deadline set by the department or program to which you are applying. For more information, see About the Online Application Process.

Applicants who are unable to use the online application:
If you are unable to apply, online you may obtain an application in PDF format. You will need to print the application in order to complete it. Once you have completed it, you will mail parts of it to the department to which you are applying and other parts you will mail to the graduate school. About the Online Application Process:
All students, domestic and international, who are applying to a graduate degree program should use the online application. The online application is the preferred method of applying. It allows you to submit statements of purpose, writing samples, and letters of recommendation electronically. When you apply online you will not need to send a paper application.
In order to access the online application, you will be required to create a user account and establish a password. Creating the account is fast, free, and easy. The process consists of populating the 11 required fields of the account registration form. After completing the registration form, you must answer five preliminary questions that enable the system to properly route you to the appropriate application type and pre-populate certain fields of the application. You will then continue to the formal application, unless prompted by the system to complete a preliminary application. For more information, see Preliminary Application.
The formal application consists of the following areas:
- Instructions: The instructions will help you to complete your application successfully. Please read them carefully so that you understand the application requirements.
- Application Form: Access the application here and carefully complete it.
- Essays: Type your essays directly into the application form or create them in your preferred word processor and upload them from your computer.
- Supplemental Forms: These forms are an additional requirement of your application and cannot be submitted online. Review the instructions and print the forms as needed.
- Recommendations: Request that your recommenders submit recommendations for you online, and track their progress.
- Application Inspector: Use Application Inspector to make sure that all the required questions are answered and that your application form is complete and ready to be submitted online.
- Payment: You may pay the $50 application fee by credit card or electronic check.
- Submit Application: Submit your application form securely online.
In addition to the above, the formal application section lists the application fee and application deadlines, and allows you to track your status and update answers to the preliminary questions.

About the Printable Application (PDF) Process:
All students, domestic and international, who are applying to a graduate degree program and are unable to utilize the online application should use the PDF application. Print the application and and make sure to complete all sections as applicable, especially when indicating the department to which you are applying. To submit a paper application, mail Part 1 to the graduate school; mail the following directly to the department: Parts 2, 3, 4, 5A-5C, one set of official transcripts from each school attended, and any additional material required by the department. Applications received without payment or a fee waiver will not be processed.
Please check with the department to which you have applied regarding the status of your application and receipt of supporting credentials.
Note: International applicants who have concerns about completing Part 4, the Financial Certificate, should complete the application to the best of their ability. The information included in the Financial Certificate is required by the university for statistical purposes but the graduate school does not use it to determine financial awards.
